Katherine Barlow (1862-1899) was a widely admired school teacher in Green Lake, Texas, known for her sweet disposition and spiced peaches recipe. She fell in love with a black onion picker named Sam and developed a secret relationship with him. The town's racist laws during its Wild West days made it dangerous for them to be together openly. One stormy night, the two were discovered kissing in the schoolhouse, and Sam was to be hanged for his crime. Katherine desperately pleaded with the town sheriff for Sam's life, and he demanded a kiss from her in return. When she refused, he attempted to force himself on her, but she managed to escape. She tried to flee town with Sam, but unfortunately, they were not quick enough - as Sam was rowing across the lake to safety, he was shot to death.
In devastation and rage, Katherine paid the sheriff a visit the next morning - she shot him dead on the spot. Then she finally gave him that kiss he had asked for, leaving a red mark on his cheek. This moment was the birth of the legendary "Kissin' Kate." She become an infamous outlaw, first killing the men responsible for Sam's death, then going on to kill many others, and robbing them along the way. She was always sure to leave her iconic kiss on her victims' cheeks. Legend has it that she became extremely rich through her killing spree across the Wild West, but buried the money somewhere deep in the desert ground before she died. To this day, no one has been able to uncover the treasure.
"You, and your children and your children's children will dig for the next one hundred years, and you will never find it." - Katherine Barlow
